Numeracy

Mathematics learning at Sunshine Harvester Primary School is designed to build confident, capable, and curious learners. Through explicit teaching and purposeful practice, students develop strong foundations in number, algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics, and probability. They are encouraged to think critically, communicate their reasoning, solve problems, and make connections between mathematics and the world around them. We support all students to experience success and develop the skills needed to thrive in school and beyond. Each lesson follows a consistent structure that supports all learners:

• Daily Review – Revisiting and consolidating previously taught concepts to strengthen recall and fluency.
• Activating Prior Knowledge – Helping students connect new learning to what they already know.
• Explicit Teaching – Teachers demonstrate new concepts using clear worked examples and step-by-step explanations.
• Checking for Understanding – Teachers regularly check student thinking using strategies like questioning and mini whiteboards to ensure all students are on track.
• Guided Practice – Students practise new skills with support and feedback from the teacher.
• Independent Practice – Opportunities for students to apply their learning independently to build mastery.
• Support and Extension – Responsive instruction ensures students who need extra help are supported, while those ready for challenge are extended

Additionally:

• Students from Years 3 to 6 are encouraged to participate in the Australian Mathematics Competition each year. 

• Each student has a Mathletics account which they can access from home, to help them continue practising skills learnt in the classroom and to share their learning with their families.
• Student learning is also shared with families on Seesaw, our digital communication platform.
