The philosophy of the Numeracy program at Sunshine Harvester Primary School is to ensure all students obtain the knowledge of place value, number facts and problem solving skills that they need in order to perform daily mathematics tasks.
Our program focuses on building students' understanding of mathematics vocabulary, language, thinking and reasoning by providing hands-on, engaging activities that link mathematics to real life concepts that make sense to children. Numeracy lessons also include warm up games or activities to help students practise their number facts and times tables.
We use ongoing assessment and data to identify the learning needs of each child and provide intervention and extension programs to students when required. We are committed to teaching a curriculum that provides opportunities for consolidation and enrichment as mathematics becomes more complex through each level of schooling. Students from Years 3 to 6 are encouraged to participate in the Australian Mathematics Competition each year.
Each student has a Mathletics account which they can access from home, to help them continue to practise skills learnt in the classroom and to share their learning with their families.
